Properly designed meditation furniture can really enhance your experience of meditation by helping you to remain comfortably seated. This is especially important if you like to meditate for more than 20 minutes at a time.
Meditation benches and specially designed meditation cushions can also make a huge difference to the success and enjoyment of your meditation by helping you to sit with the correct posture. When you sit correctly, your spine will be straight and your lungs will be free to move. This will allow you to breath more naturally and more deeply, and it also help you feel more focussed. The result? A more comfortable, more effective, deeper experience of meditation.
You owe it to yourself to be comfortable when you meditate. The last thing you want during a meditation is to be distracted by soreness or cramps, so if you prefer to sit on the floor when you meditate, then consider using a pillow which will make you comfortable as you meditate: a zafu cushion, a zabuton cushion or zabuton zafu meditation combo. These types of meditation cushions are designed for one thing and one thing only, to improve your meditation by making you comfortable and supporting correct posture.
A good quality meditation bench is a fantastic idea if you wish to be able to sit or kneel comfortably during meditation. The slightly angled seating of a meditation bench will help to tilt your pelvis slightly so that you entire back comes into proper alignment.
Many people like to use a plain timber meditation bench, but I usually recommend a kneeling meditation bench with a padded surface. Much more comfy for your bottom!
Many people prefer not to sit cross legged when they meditate as they find that this causes too much discomfort. A meditation bench may be the perfect solution. The regular use of a meditation bench will reduce strain on your knees, ankles hips and back, and provide more reliable support than any other form of meditation furniture.
